How Do I Mix Interior Design Trends Easily?
Introduction:
A question I get asked a lot is this ‘’What if I like the Scandinavian feel, but my partner likes the industrial feel. How do I mix those interior design styles?
You will be happy to know, that most styles have some element that is either the same or very similar to other styles and they can complement each other quite seamlessly.
For instance, a relaxed bohemian living room can be subtly transformed into a more Scandinavian vibe by simplifying its elements.
As you delve deeper into each style, you'll notice that they often intertwine with elements from various other styles, making the blending process more intuitive and creative. So, fear not – with a bit of experimentation and open-mindedness, you can create a harmonious fusion of your favourite design trend.
There is no right or wrong way to mix your design styles, however, if you want the rooms to flow and the styles to mix effortlessly then follow the below steps to ensure you create a cohesive space.
So let's jump in, here are my x5 quick tips to quickly and easily ensure your design mix-up is a success! 👊
1. Choose one colour pallet and stick to it:
By sticking to a single colour palette and incorporating it consistently throughout your interior, you can create a sense of flow and unity that ties everything together seamlessly. Whether it's a calming neutral palette or a bold burst of colour, choosing one dominant hue and incorporating variations of it in your furnishings and decor will help create a cohesive and visually pleasing environment. Embracing a unified colour scheme not only simplifies the design process but also ensures that your space flows and feels effortlessly stylish.
It also makes things a lot easier for you to design ;)
2. Showcase Your Favourite Items
Don't be afraid to showcase that stunning antique or quirky artwork that you adore – let it take centre stage and become a captivating feature in your room. Mixing furniture from different eras adds an eclectic charm and personality to your space, making it feel curated and inviting. Instead of striving for uniformity, focus on selecting one or two standout pieces that truly resonate with you and allow them to shine. Whether it's a vintage armchair or a bold statement artwork, these unique elements can add depth, character, and a touch of your own personal style to your home.
So, go ahead and let your individuality shine through – after all, it's those one-of-a-kind pieces that make your space truly special..
3. Keep Your Flooring Neutral
By keeping your flooring neutral, you create a blank canvas that effortlessly complements a variety of design styles and colour schemes. Whether you are leaning towards modern minimalism or cosy farmhouse chic, neutral flooring provides the perfect backdrop to let your furnishings and decor shine. Additionally, neutral flooring helps to visually enlarge smaller spaces and promotes a sense of tranquillity and balance throughout your home. From classic hardwoods to elegant tiles, choosing neutral flooring ensures longevity and allows you to easily update your space with seasonal or trend-driven accents.
If it is hard to change the flooring, think about large neutral rugs. They do just as good a job and even add depth and different textures.
4. Decide On Your Percentage
A great way to mixing up your interior styles, is to adopt the 80/20 rule. You've got your main style that you absolutely love, right? Let's say it's that cosy rustic vibe. Well, you make that the star of the show, covering about 80% of your room's design with big-ticket items like your sofa and dining table, all in that rustic charm. Then comes the fun part – adding in about 20% of your secondary style. Maybe it's a bit of modern flair with some funky lighting or colourful cushions. These little accents bring that extra pop while still letting your main style shine. It keeps things balanced and interesting.
5. Look For The Common Denominator
As I said at the beginning of the blog, most styles have common denominators, for example the ever popular Scandinavian trend is about texture, neutral colours and feelings of calm and cosiness. However, a lot of the furniture used does have a retro modern feel about it, combining these two styles is a sure win! To help further, below is list of styles which work effortlessly together:
Have you noticed I have only recommended x2 styles to work with. Anymore and it can start to look messy and chaotic.
Scandinavian and Bohemian – Great for relaxing bedrooms
Scandinavian and Retro modern – Works well in most rooms, especially dining rooms. You can even get the colourful vibe of 'retro Modern' into your space by selecting a darker timber in your furniture. This lends its self to pops of colour in your cushions.
Art deco and Retro Modern – Great for hallways and bathrooms
Scandinavian and Coastal – A nice relaxed vibe
Modern Minimalist and Eclectic – Works well in an open plan environment
Rustic Farmhouse and Scandinavian - Just about anywhere
To Summarise:
keep it simple, follow the above hints and don't over think it, have fun and let your personality shine through. Always remember it is only the opinions of who are going to live in that space that matter!
Have fun
Debbie
